Black History Month was created to celebrate and share the accomplishments of members of the Black community. Black History Month is NOT the time to pull out books solely focused on Black oppression.
Teachingittrill on Instagram said it best, “Black History Month is a celebration of Black heritage, culture and experiences. If your assignment doesn’t lift your students up, then do not teach it. Stop spirit murdering Black students during Black History Monty.” Check out her full thread for do’s and don’ts for Black History Month.
Use the picture book lists below to help you highlight members of the Black community.
And remember these books can be shared all year long!
