She is often forgotten and is extremely important to his legacy.⁣
⁣
I won this copy of A Time to Break Silence a few months ago. Before getting this book, I hadn't touched Dr.King's work since high school.⁣
⁣
I'm so grateful I had teachers who shared more than his I Have a Dream speech with us. Grateful.⁣
⁣
I challenge all educators who only share that speech to read and share another one with your students. The beautiful thing is, his writing can be shared ALL year long. Not just in January or February.⁣

It's not like Halloween or Valentine's Day. He's an author and you can read his work anytime. ⁣

While reading, I’m missing teaching 5th grade. Last year, I taught my students about The Great Migration before we studied The Harlem Renaissance, and I wish I had this book!⁣

We could have had so many conversations about history with this book. 🎤We could have had it allllllllll🎶⁣

Educators, stop repeating this bs that students are behind. Who are they behind... in a pandemic?⁣⁣
⁣⁣
Why haven't standards, norms, and expectations been adjusted to kids learning in a pandemic? ⁣⁣
⁣⁣
In August, I said, if we (educators) don't stop saying kids are behind, we will hear this covid gap nonsense for 10+ years. And the expectation for us will be to catch them up, with, of course, limited resources and support. ⁣⁣
⁣⁣
And it is only going to hurt our most vulnerable students.⁣⁣
⁣⁣
We've been told over and over to make our lessons relevant. And we should prepare them for careers that haven't been created yet. But, pre-covid, how much of our teaching reflected that?⁣⁣
⁣⁣
The fact that my first-grade students can manipulate Canvas (a college platform) and Zoom (meant for adults) says a lot about them.⁣⁣
⁣⁣
Many of us are missing out on opportunities to prepare them for the future because we are stuck on outdated practices.⁣⁣
⁣⁣
Are you teaching learners how to write digitally?⁣⁣
⁣⁣
Are you teaching students how to collaborate virtually?⁣⁣
⁣⁣
Are you allowing them to create videos to explain what they learn and express their creativity?⁣⁣
⁣⁣
Are you teaching students how to write an email?⁣⁣
⁣⁣
Are you letting students practice online public speaking skills?⁣⁣
⁣⁣
Are you taking this opportunity to teach them real skills they will need in the future?⁣⁣
⁣⁣
Administrators and those responsible for creating state standards should be actively working on adjusting the standards to meet students where they are instead of where they "should" be. ⁣⁣
⁣⁣
I'm not holding my kids to norms, standards, and expectations of students who were not learning in a pandemic. ⁣⁣
⁣⁣
This is something I constantly have to check. It has been tough unlearning practices that I've done for ten years, to where I'm rethinking my place in education. While I'm still in the classroom, I will do my very best to serve students in the best way possible. ⁣⁣
